Brazil condemns Israel’s attack on Iran: “Violation of sovereignty”
In a statement published Friday (Jun. 13), the Brazilian government condemned Israel’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities and missile factories, which killed senior military officers and scientists from the country.
“The Brazilian government expresses firm condemnation and is watching with great concern the Israeli air offensive launched last night against Iran, in clear violation of the country’s sovereignty and international law,” the note from the Brazilian Foreign Ministry reads.
The attacks, the ministry adds, threaten to plunge the entire region into a large-scale conflict, “with a high risk for peace, security, and the world economy. Brazil urges all the parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and calls for an immediate end to hostilities.”
The supreme leader of the Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Friday (13) promised to respond to Israel’s attacks. According to the Israeli authorities, Iran has already retaliated with drone attacks, but Tehran denies this.
Atomic bombs
Israel attacked Iran claiming that the country is building atomic bombs that could be used against Tel-Aviv. Iran denies this and maintains that it only uses atomic technology for peaceful purposes, such as energy production.
Iran is a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), but the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reportedly objected to Tehran’s commitments to the organization.
Israel, on the other hand, is one of the few nations not to have signed the NPT.
